Lakers win two

On the basketball courts, Mattamuskeet Lakers defeated Cape Hatteras Hurricanes twice in the last week of regular season play.

In Buxton on Feb. 6, the Lakers won 58-45. In Mattamuskeet on Feb. 8, the winning score was 51-48 with the Lakers on top.

In the game at Cape Hatteras, the Lakers led the entire game. At the half, the score was Lakers 29, Cape Hatteras 19.

In the third quarter, Cape Hatteras closed the gap to five. But Mattamuskeet pulled away in the fourth on scoring by Kevin Williford from the field and the free line. In the final quarter, Williford, who plays center, scored half of his eight points at the line. Williford score 16 in the game, 10 of which were at the foul line. High scorer for the Lakers was Matt Clarke with 17. Antonio Rodman scored 12.

For Cape Hatteras, Keegan O’Neal was the top scorer with 14 points.

The game at Buxton was marred by three technical fouls called against Cape Hatteras and with a Hurricane fan escorted out of the game.

In Mattamuskeet on Feb. 8, the Hurricanes led at halftime 28 to 25, but the Lakers surged into the lead at the end of three. In the third, the Lakers scored 14 points to the Hurricanes 7 to take a 39-35 lead. Cape Hatteras outscored the Lakers in the final quarter by one point, but the Lakers claimed the win 51-48.
