Candidates file on opening day

On the Feb. 12 opening day for candidate filing, primaries and general election contests are shaping up.
In the North Carolina Senate District 1, two Republicans registered for a chance at the new district seat. Clark Twiddy from Colington and Bob Steinburg from Edenton are set to run in the May 8 primary.
The new Senate district has the following counties: Dare, Currituck, Camden, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Gates, Hertford, Chowan, Washington, Tyrrell and Hyde counties. Current Senator Bill Cook represented the old district but previously announced he was not running for re-election.

CANDIDATES were lined up at the Dare County Board of Elections office on Monday as filing began for the May primaries. Ervin Bateman was the first to throw his hat in the ring; he filed in the Democratic primary for a chance to run for the At-Large seat on the Dare County Board of Commissioners. Democrat Tess Judge from Kitty Hawk signed up to run for the same North Carolina House District 6 seat.
For the U.S. Congress, Republican Phil Law filed to run for the office. Current officeholder Walter Jones has until Feb. 28 to decide if he wants to run. Law ran against Jones in 2016.
In Dare County, the following filed candidacy papers for the indicated offices:
Board of Commissioners District 1, representing Dare’s mainland and Roanoke Island, incumbent Republican Jim Tobin.
Board of Commissioners District 2, representing Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head and Colington, incumbent Republican Rob Ross.
Board of Commissioners District 5, at large, Democrat Ervin Bateman and Republican Ed Danko. Incumbent Jack Shea has not announced his intentions.
Dare County Sheriff: incumbent Republican Doug Doughtie
Dare County Clerk of Superior Court: incumbent Republican Dean Martin Tolson
Dare County Register of Deeds: incumbent Democrat Vanzolla McMurran and Republican Cheryl House
Elections to the Dare County Board of Education are now partisan contests.
Dare Board of Education District 1: Frank O. Hester, Republican, filed for the seat, currently held by Charlotte White.
Dare Board of Education, District 2: Jen Alexander, Democrat, filed for the seat, which is currently occupied by Joe Tauber.
Dare Board of Education, District 3: Representing Duck, Southern Shores and Kitty Hawk, incumbent Margaret Lawler, a Democrat, filed for re-election.
