The Town of Kill Devil Hills recently released an update report for two capital projects in an effort to inform local citizens of the status of the two projects currently under way; the 2017/18 Multi-Use Path Phases 3 and 4 and the Aviation Park Roller Rink Reconstruction.

RPC Contracting, Inc., began work on the 2017/18 Multi-Use Path Phases 3 and 4 project on September 5 that will install a 10 foot wide multi-use path along Bay Drive and West First Street with the associated storm drainage and road improvements. Upon complete the project will connect the ends of the existing path at Canal Drive and West First Street intersection with the north end at the Bay Drive and West Avalon Street intersection.

Partial road closures can be expected on Bay Drive between West Fourth Street and West Avalon Drive. The southbound lane will be closed during working hours to allow storm drain installation and removal of concrete in the existing sub-base. Flagmen will be on-site to direct traffic in this area. There are no water outages planned.

Recent progress includes the installation of approximately 1,300 feet of storm pipe and storm structures along Bay Drive from West Avalon Drive to approximately West Durham Street. Portions of driveways on the west side of Bay Drive have been removed and replaced temporarily with road millings. Final surface course of the roadway will be installed at a later date, after storm pipe crossings are installed.

During the next few days, storm drainage installation and driveway removal will continue along Bay Drive from the area of West Durham Street south. Installation of the stone base for the multi-use path will also continue.

The project total including grant funding is $1,324,885.00 with a summer 2018 completion date.

Work at Aviation Park Roller Rink, damaged in September 2016 by Hurricane Matthew, also started September 5 and includes demolition and replacement of the rink, dasher boards and fencing.

Construction of the rink is complete with the exception of benches just outside of the gate, final surface coating and markings. Although the current surface is not the permanent surface the Town has opened the rink to the public.

The next and final step for completing the rink is to apply surface coat and markings. Manufacturer recommendations require both to be applied at temperatures no less than 50 degrees. Coatings and markings are planned to be applied on days when low temperatures are forecast to be 50 degrees or higher.

Hatchell Concrete, Inc., is the contractor for this $254,043.80 project with a completion date determined by favorable weather.
