Cape Hatteras girls win in state game

Cape Hatteras Secondary girls basketball teams smashed Creswell 59-27 Thursday evening in a second round state Basketball Championship game.

The gymnasium at Cape Hatteras Secondary was packed with students and Cape Hatteras fans, who filled the vast space with deep and loud cheers showing much support for the Lady Hurricanes.

It was a rough first half for both teams with lots of turnovers and errant passes. At the end of the first quarter, Cape Hatteras had managed nine points and Creswell three.

The second quarter, the teams scored evenly with Creswell’s Nikki Ambrose scoring six of her nine points for the night. For Cape Hatteras, Lexus Meekins matched Ambrose. At the half, Cape Hatteras led 21-14.

Cape Hatteras broke through the scoring block in the third quarter. Savannah Scarborough scored 11 points included one of her two threes for the night. The Cape Hatteras team amassed 20 points in the third, while holding Creswell to five.

In the fourth, Cape Hatteras stacked up 18 points to Creswell’s eight.

In the third round of the state championships, Cape Hatteras was scheduled to play at home again on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 5 p.m. The opponent is Roxboro Community School, a tuition-free public charter school serving 704 students in grades six through 12. Roxboro is in Person County, north of Durham and close to the North Carolina-Virginia state line.
