MANTEO, NC – John Ferman Wilson III, 92, died peacefully in his sleep at home at Mother Vineyard on Monday, February 26, 2018.

Born on the North End of Roanoke Island in 1925, “Jack” is the son of John and Alma Wilson. He grew up in the shadow of the Etheridge oaks of Island Farm where he was brought up by his grandparents Adam Dough Etheridge and Lillie Johnson Etheridge Swindell. Jack graduated from Manteo High School and played basketball at East Carolina Teacher’s College in Greenville before returning home to join his friend Gordon Kellogg in the building supply business where the two were business partners for over 40 years.

  Community service, coach- ing basketball, and more than 30 years involvement with the Roanoke Island Fire Department confirmed many of Jack’s core values – including his belief that the more one gives, the more one receives. He served as the stalwart steward of the Mother Vine for 62 years and was always enthusiastic to relate its history and discuss its future.

  He was predeceased by his sisters, Ivadean Priest and Pearl Capps. Jack is survived by his wife and best friend of 70 years Estelle Jones Wilson and his son John Wilson IV.

Friends and family will gather on Friday, March 2, 2018, at 3 pm at Manteo Cemetery for a graveside service. There will be a reception at 108 Budleigh following the burial.

Jack Wilson was an avid supporter of the Roanoke Island Fire Department and Outer Banks Conservation-ists’ Island Farm.
