NC 12 status in Dare and Hyde counties

As of Tuesday morning, NCDOT reports that crews are working extremely hard to meet a 6:30 p.m. target for reopening both closed sections of NC 12 on Hatteras and Ocracoke.

Helping clear the roads are crews from Dare County as well as personnel and/or equipment from Hyde, Washington, Currituck, Chowan and Hertford counties assisting.

At 1:15 p.m., Tuesday, March 6, no structural damage to the roadway had been found.

NC 12 conditions Tuesday morning:

NC12 Beach Road, Kitty Hawk, South Nags Head, and Old Oregon Inlet Road: very minor overwash at the last high tide on Monday. Very little sand and debris on the roadway. Open and passable.

NC 12 at Bonner Bridge South to Rodanthe: Only remaining areas of deep sand are just north of the Pea Island Visitor Center and at the S-curves north of Mirlo Beach. Pockets of standing water on the roadway the entire length of NC 12. Impassable.

NC 12 Rodanthe South: Standing water has receded; sand on road north end of Buxton. Four to six inches of water on road in Avon. Open and passable.

NC 12 Ocracoke: Moderate overwash at last high tide which pushed additional sand on highway. One full lane is partially clear. Work to continue Tuesday on efforts to clear. Standing water remains on NC 12. Additional loaders and an operator have been sent to assist. If needed, additional assets will be moved to the island. Impassable.
