Debi Equils, Landfill Attendant with Dare County Public Works, is the Dare County Employee of the Month for March 2018.

Solid Waste Superintendent Shanna Fullmer presented the award to Equils at the March 5 meeting of the Dare County Board of Commissioners.

Equils began working for Dare County in 2003. As Attendant at the Landfill facility in Manns Harbor, her primary responsibility is operating the scales. “It’s not as easy as it sounds,” said Fullmer while presenting the award. “You’ve got a set of scales coming in, you’ve got a set of scales going out, you’ve got different kinds of trucks coming in and out, you’ve got the public, commercial vendors, and she keeps it all straight. I don’t know how she does it.”

Serving as scales operator is only a small part of what Equils does for Public Works. She is always willing to take on additional responsibilities and makes life easier for others. “Debi is a big reason why Public Works is a great department to work in, “said Fullmer. “She is fun to be around and makes everything she does look easy and effortless. I am always amazed at what she’s willing to do,” said Fullmer.

During her 15 years with Dare County, Equils has expanded her education and horizons. According to Fullmer, “Debi refuses to be labeled just a scales operator. She is so much more than that and we are grateful to have her.”
