On April 7, 2018, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum presents the 5th Underwater Heritage Symposium.

In this day-long event, professional divers and underwater archaeologists team up to offer presentations on diving experiences, underwater photography, history of U-boat war off the coast, and shipwrecks.

Hear their stories based on firsthand experience and discover the amazing history present off the Outer Banks coast.

The symposium opens at 10 a.m. and the stories finish at 5 p.m. Presentations are allotted 40 minutes. The event is free and open to the public.

The agenda features three presentations in this order before a lunch break:

“U-Boats off the North Carolina Coast” by Jim Bunch

“The Sinking of Diamond Shoals Lightship and SS Merak,” by Dave Sommers

“Wreck of Mirlo,” by Marc Corbett

After lunch, five presentations are offered:

“The German Battleship Ostfriestand,” by J.T. Barker

“NOAA’s First Special Use Permit Dives,” by Hal Good

“An Archaeological and Historical Shipwreck Investigation of the Miss Betty J,” by Joyce Steinmetz

“Two Decades before the Mast with Blackbeard,” by David Moore

“Commerce and Conflict: Wilmington, Fort Fisher and Blockade Running During the Civil War,” by John Morris.

The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is located at 59200 Museum Drive, Hatteras. It is at the southern tip of Hatteras Island, just past the North Carolina Ferry Docks.
