Cape Hatteras wins against Columbia

On Friday afternoon, March 30, Cape Hatteras Secondary’s baseball team chalked up its first win of the season. The Hurricanes defeated the Columbia Wildcats 10-3 in seven innings.

In the opening inning, Columbia took a two-run lead when lead-off batters Cameron Reynolds and Elliott Sawyer crossed the plate.

But Cape Hatteras bounced back. Nathaniel Kiefer, designated hitter for Cape Hatteras, powered in three runs and Cape Hatteras gained the lead which the team did not relinquish.

In the third inning, Cape Hatteras pitcher Evan Cabral picked off two Columbia runners at first base. Hurricane hitter Shae O’Neal powered a 350-foot triple and came home to score a run.

Cape Hatteras pushed across two runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth. Cabral hit a double in the sixth.

The game finished with Cape Hatteras executing a double play.

For Cape Hatteras, Cabral pitched five innings, struck out six, issued one walk and gave up five hits and two runs. Cody MacDowell pitched an inning, gave up two hits, one run and a walk. Zeb Shoemaker closed out the game for the Hurricanes striking out one and accounting to two hits.

For Columbia, junior Peyton Nicholson came to the mound after one out in the first inning. Nicholson gave up eight hits, issued three walks and struck out five Hurricane batters.

At game time, the wind was blowing 28 miles per hour but it died down around an hour and a quarter later.

During Spring Break, Cape Hatteras played in a tournament in Princeton.

Early next week, Cape Hatteras plays at Manteo and Creswell. Games start at 6 p.m.

Columbia plays next Friday, April 13 at Creswell. Start time is 5 p.m.
