Currituck girls won a March 28 triangular meet at First Flight High School with 94.5 points, scoring heavily in the sprints and distance events. First Flight girls earned 68 points with the majority coming in the jumps and distance event to finish third overall just 2.5 points behind second place Hertford County.

In boys competition, there were four teams earning points. Hertford County led the field with 93.5 points for first place while Currituck County with 78.5 points finished second. First Flight dominated the distance events to finish third with 74.5 points and Ocracoke High School trailed field in fourth with 7.5 points.

Running at the First Flight High School track, junior standout Heidi Sabatini led the Nighthawks girls with three individual first place finishes by winning the discus, the long jump and the high jump.

Senior distance ace Skylar Stultz led the Nighthawks boys with two individual first place finishes in the 1600 and 800.  Stultz picked up a third first place for the day on the 3200 relay.

Other individual winners for First Flight boys included Zach Hughes in the 400, Max Bowlin in the 3200, and Caleb Drysdale in the Discus.

Also performing well for First Flight girls was Jill O’Dell, who finished first in the 800.

Currituck boys won one relay event, the 4×400 meter relay and two individual events.

Ricky Owens took the varsity boys 110 meter hurdles and David Foreman edged out teammate Michael Culpepper by one-one-hundredth of a second to win the varsity boys 200 meter dash.

In girls competition, Amberine Brown and Hailee Reinke won two individual events each for Currituck. Brown was an easy winner in the varsity girls 100 meter and 200 meter dashes, while Reinke picked up first place finishes in the varsity girls 1600 meter and 3200 meter runs.

Other Currituck winners included Isis Saunders in the girls 300 meter hurdles, Destiny Ferebee in the varsity girls shot put in addition to the girls 4×800, 4×200, and 4×100 meter relay teams.

Before taking a week off for spring break, First Flight runners Skylar Stultz and Zach Hughes ran at Christopher Newport University’s 34th Annual H.S. Captain’s Classic meet in Newport News, Va. on March 30-31. The Nighthawks duo scored a combined 32 points to place First flight sixth among 13 teams competing.

Stultz won the 800 meter run finals with a 1:57.11. Hughes ran three races, picking up second in the 3200 meter run, second in the 400 meter dash and third in the 800 meter run finals.

The next scheduled track and field meet is at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11 at Currituck County High School in Barco.
