Registration will be accepted until May 15 for the Northeast District 4-H Science Camp that will be held in Rocky Mount on July 15-18.

This year, North Carolina Cooperative Extension is offering a national award-winning program called “My Preparedness Initiative (MyPI). This innovative three-part program, focused on emergency preparedness and leadership, empowers teens to engage their families, their peers, and their communities in disaster readiness and response.

Youth ages 12-18 will have the opportunity to enhance their leadership, communication and decision-making skills while simultaneously building a lifesaving skill set that includes basic first aid, fire safety and suppression, search and rescue techniques, and disaster medical response.

Participants will experience CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) training, sponsored by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency); a disaster simulation exercise; a specialized technology module demonstrating the technology available for disaster response; and will participate in a career track that focuses on the emergency management, public safety and fire service professions.

As a community service project, each participant will work with their 4-H agent and the MyPI certified instructor to help develop emergency supply kits and emergency communication plans for their household and six other households in their community. Upon completing all components of the program, youth will receive their MyPI certification and their personal disaster response ready bag.

Camp fees are $125 and include lodging, meals, supplies and insurance. Space is limited.

Registration is not complete until fees are paid. Payment may be made in person at the Currituck Center, or mailed to Currituck Extension Center, 120 Community Way, Barco, NC 27917. Checks should be made payable to “Currituck County.”
