The eastbound lanes of the Wright Memorial Bridge reopened today, but the delays aren’t done yet.

The two lanes of U.S. 158 heading into Kitty Hawk closed in October for repair and refurbishment work, a $21 million project funded by a state initiative to improve conditions and the lifespans of high-value bridges across North Carolina.

Work on the three-mile span at the Currituck/Dare county line required drivers to share the two westbound lanes, leading to some traffic jams.

The span was expected to reopen by May 14, but opened a bit early this morning instead. However, single-lane closures on both sides of the bridge will continue for the next few days as crews complete lane striping work.

On weekdays (Mondays-Thursdays) during the summer months, motorists can expect periodic single lane closures on the eastbound side of the bridge while contractors complete maintenance on the bridge’s substructure.
