The Town of Duck issued an alert Thursday morning after a bear was seen near the beach.

Town officials said the bear was spotted north of the Duck Research Pier, and was last seen around 10 a.m.

“Authorities are hopeful that the bear will make its way back to more suitable habitat,” the town said in an email.

Sean Cogan, a visitor in Duck, saw the bear around 6 a.m. at the Sanderling resort. He appeared to be exploring near a pier, perhaps looking for food.

The town recommended residents and visitors continue keep children and pets closely supervised or inside.  It is also a good idea to secure trash completely inside trash cans.

If you see the bear, do not approach and call Dare County dispatch at 252-473-3444.
