Dare Day fun set for Saturday

Dare Day on the Manteo waterfront will celebrate the Outer Banks with family fun, live music, magic shows, pirate battles, pig races and blue ribbon competition Saturday, June 2.

The 43rd annual event starts early with the GoFAR Dare Day 5K and Fun Run. With the event, students from all Dare County schools finish this year’s running program. Register at obxgofar.org.

More than 100 vendors, featuring food and art and crafts, book authors, are planning to be at Dare Day.

The Kids Zone, with games and face painting, free amusement rides and bouncy houses, will be located by the waterfront playground and weather tower.

Pirates abound during the day. The Motley Tones, a group of singing pirates, will belt out sea chanties and tell pirate tales.

Three times, the Shadow Players Stage Combat Group will perform. The group features East Carolina University pirate mascot Steve Whetzel. Comedy and rousing sword fights will be fun.

Captain Jim and his magic pirate show with its own stage and parrots come to Dare Day. It’s a unique show for the entire family.

Four times, pigs will race. Hogway Speedway Racing Pigs from the Circle “C” Farms, Newton, will put on four, 30-minute shows. The racing pigs are a tradition at the North Carolina State Fair and are coming to Dare Day.

Blue Ribbon competition for the best pie, cake, bread, cookies and canned goods is sponsored by 108 Budleigh. This is the third annual competition. Entries will be accepted on Friday, June 1 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and on Saturday, June 2 from 9 to 11 a.m. at 108 Budleigh. Go to dareday.org for complete rules and entry forms.
Two stages, Magnolia Pavilion and Boathouse, host music and presentations.
