The North Carolina Forestry Service and the Nature Conservancy are planning controlled burns in Nags Head Woods today and Thursday.

The burns will reduce fuel (dry, dead combustible materials such as tree limbs, leaves, grasses, etc.) along fire breaks in the woods. Fire breaks are gaps in vegetation or other combustible material that acts as a barrier to slow or stop the progress of a bushfire or wildfire.

The town trail and the YMCA trail will both be closed during the burns, which are expected to start between noon and 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6 and about 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 7 and should be complete by late afternoon on both days. Please stay out of the area during the burns.
