Nags Head

Captain Edward Lewis “Budgie” Sadler, 81, of Nags Head, died Thursday, June 7, 2018, at Chesapeake General Hospital after a long battle with breathing issues. Born in Suffolk, Virginia on May 3, 1937, he was the son of the late Lida Holland Sadler and Alvah Ernest Sadler.

Growing up Budgie spent many wonderful summers at the family cottage court, AE Sadler Cottages in Nags Head. After graduating from Fork Union Military School, he went on to Chowan for a while, but his heart was always in Nags Head. He moved permanently to the Outer Banks in the late 1950’s and opened “Budgie’s Sporting Goods Shop.” He loved to fish and hunt and worked on his father’s boat at Oregon Inlet, later to own his own head boat, “The Roseanne.”

Budgie was also a community man, giving of his time to the young. He, with friend Leonard Logan, were Cub Scout leaders and enjoyed taking the boys on fishing trips. Any young boy or girl who wanted to learn to fish, Budgie was there to teach. He was also a Little League baseball coach.

He loved to dance and until the last several years, he could be found on the dance floor shagging the night away.

Budgie served in the Air Police, was a past Nags Head Commissioner, past board member of ONHC Association and retired as Deputy Fire Chief of the Nags Head Volunteer Fire Department before it became a paid station. He joined the Pine Island Elks Lodge with all his Florida family buddies. Having owned and operated his own company, Outer Banks Sanitation for many years, he then moved on to other opportunities, one being with his longtime friend, Buddy Davis, where he worked for several years at Davis Yachts/Davis Boatworks. After retiring, Budgie loved his part-time/weekend jobs at Outer Banks Pier and Avalon Pier, allowing him to be involved with his love of fishing and the water. Before the breathing issues began, he also worked with Dare County Transportation and his friend, Pam Matthews.

Budgie is survived by his wife, Anna Daniels Sadler of Nags Head; son, Lewis Sadler (Patti) of Raleigh; daughters, Rene Amick of Jacksonville, Florida and Denice Privette of Williston, North Dakota; stepson, John H. Taylor III of Nags Head; and his grandchildren, along with his nieces, nephews and cousins.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Captain Jason Scott Sadler; and a sister, Jane Lee Sadler Butler.

A funeral will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, June 15, 2018, at St. Andrews By-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Nags Head, NC with Rev. Phillip R. Glick officiating. Burial will follow at 3:00 pm at Holly Lawn Cemetery, 1525 N. Main Street, Suffolk, VA 23434.
