‘No left turn’ exercise this weekend in Southern Shores

Southern Shores is testing a “no left turn” traffic directive this weekend for eastbound traffic at US 158 and Dogwood Trail.

The traffic pattern will be in place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., both Saturday, June 23 and Sunday, June 24.

“Appropriate traffic devices” placed by the Town of Southern Shores will entirely block the US 158 eastbound left-turn lane at the intersection. South Dogwood Trail will not be closed to traffic.

Town Manager Peter Rascoe said the $6,000, one-time project includes $3,400 for placing and removing barrels to block the turn lane with the remaining $2,800 going toward police expenses. NCDOT will not adjust the light schedule and there will be a no tolerance policy for anyone making a turn there.

“If you make a left turn you will get a ticket,” Rascoe said.

NCDOT and Kitty Hawk are both aware of the project but will not be involved.

During the trial, residents and visitors are asked to not stop, illegally park, or congregate near the intersection in order to watch traffic or law enforcement operations.

“Please remember vehicle parking is not allowed on public street rights-of-way (shoulders) in the Town of Southern Shores unless clearly marked by a sign allowing it,” the town said in a news release.

Neither South Dogwood Trail nor its entrance will be closed. Only eastbound traffic on US 158 in Kitty Hawk will be prevented from turning left onto the “open” South Dogwood Trail.
