Outer Banks SPCA floods

The Outer Banks SPCA flooded this morning, leading to a scramble for fosters.

Executive director John Graves said the flooding was the worst he’s seen in five years there, with water in 26 of the shelter’s 32 kennels. The SPCA put out a call on Facebook for fosters and received quick response from the community. In addition, Roanoke Island Animal Hospital is boarding six dogs.

The shelter has about 20 dogs right now and a whole lot of cats, including an overflow of kittens. You can help the group by buying small Kurunda beds for the shelter’s dogs, or adopting a kitten.

The SPCA is hosting a “Kittenpalooza” Wednesday evening at the Nags Head PetSmart from 6-8 p.m. All adoptions are free, include a kitten “starter kit” and free spay or neuter, vaccines, microchip, registration and vet visit.

Graves said Dare County has been “working diligently” to find a solution to the flooding problem, and commissioner Rob Ross in particular is working hard to help get the situation resolved.

By Monday afternoon, the water had receded some but more rainfall is in the forecast.
