Doris Rae Barnes Simmons Phelps, 89, of New Bern and formerly of Creswell died Tuesday, July 24, 2018, at Carolina East Medical Center in New Bern. 

Born Nov. 7, 1928 in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late Edgar Barnes and Cassandra Overton Barnes and was preceded in death by her husbands, Fentress Lee Simmons and Reginald Dalton Phelps and eight siblings.  She was a homemaker and member of Mount Tabor Free Will Baptist Church. 

Her family includes her sons, Craig Simmons and wife Anita of New Bern, and Freddie Simmons and wife Mello-Dee of St. Augustine, Florida.; daughter, Rose Mohler of Afton, Virginia, grandchildren, Tyler Simmons and wife Valerie and Jamie Dana and husband Steve; great granddaughter, Marigold Grace Dana and a great grandson arriving in October. 

Funeral service were held Friday, July 27 at 3 p.m. at Mount Tabor Free Will Baptist Church, Creswell with Reverends Ed Hill and Royce Reynolds officiating.  Burial followed in the church cemetery.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Mount Tabor Free Will Baptist Church at 2095 Mount Tabor Road, Creswell, 27928.
