Some homeowners in northern Roanoke Island are now seeing grass instead of flood waters in their yards.

Three vacuum trucks from Atlantic Plumbing Utilities in Virginia Beach pumped yards on Daphne, Langley and Bradford Lanes. The NC Forest Service set in three pumps to push water from Holly Ridge Road.

The vacuum trucks were scheduled to leave the area Friday afternoon. The forest service will move to Daphne to continue pumping.

An estimated 40 homes were affected by the July rain event that dumped anywhere from 5 to 20 inches of rain over the Outer Banks.

Crawl space may be affected in those homes. If crawl space was flooded, duct work may need replacing, insulation pulled out and new vapor barriers installed, county officials said.

Three houses might have had flood waters inside the home.

Addressing needs of flood victims is the Dare County Division of Social Services and volunteer organizations. The Red Cross has visited the area.

Dare citizens with flood-related needs are encouraged to call Dare Division of Social Services at 475-5500.

An early assessment has been performed by an advance team from North Carolina Baptist Men. An official assessor from that organization arrives Monday, Aug. 13 to meet with families.

Cape Hatteras United Methodist Men will also send leaders of that organization’s Early Response Team to make assessments and coordinate with the Baptist Men.
