UPDATED: Fire destroys oceanfront home on Hatteras Island

A two-alarm fire brought firefighters from four departments to Sea Isle Hills to Waves on Thursday afternoon.

Four people from Richmond, Va., were in the cottage when the fire started. All escaped without injury.

The oceanfront rental cottage was completely destroyed.

Two ladder trucks, a tanker from Roanoke Island, an engine from Avon and multiple other pieces of firefighting equipment were on the scene. Firefighters responding to the fire came from Chicamacomico Banks, Avon, Buxton and Roanoke Island. Also on the scene were Dare County Sheriff’s deputies, the county’s fire marshal and two emergency medical services team.

Dare County’s water plant in Rodanthe boosted pressure to assist with fighting the fire. A hydrant was in front of the cottage. A five-inch line was run from an adjacent subdivision.

The conflagration did not spread to adjacent structures.

The assessed value of the cottage is $701,700.

The vacationers were provided other accommodations.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Water supply was said to be an issue, as was the wind. Early reports indicate there are no injuries.
