First Flight High School won both boys and girls cross country races Wednesday in its first home 2-A Northeastern Coastal Conference meet this season.

Nighthawks junior Zach Hughes took first place in the boy’s race and freshman Madison Pugh was the leading First Flight runner in the girl’s race.

Finishing first in a field of 21 runners, Hughes covered the 5,000 meter course in 16:35, more than 30 seconds faster than his first 2017 race time and just 14 seconds off his personal best.

In a show of strength, First Flight runners captured the first nine finish places. With points awarded to a team’s first seven runners corresponding to their finish position, one point for first place and 10 points for 10th place, the cross country team with the lowest combined score for its top five runners wins. The First Flight sweep gave the Nighthawks what’s considered a perfect score of 15 points. Currituck County, led by Caleb Price in 10th place, was the second place team with 50 points. Pasquotank County and Northeastern each had non-scoring runners in the field.

In girls competition Pugh’s winning 22:39 time helped the Nighthawks finish the three-team competition with 18 points, Currituck County was second with 37 and Pasquotank County finished a distant third with 80 points. Hailee Reinke was the leading Currituck County runner at 25:22.

First Flight runners will be in action again Sept. 5 at Hertford County. Boys are scheduled to run at 4:45 p.m., girls at 5:15 p.m.
