Officials: Hyde flooding rivals Hurricane Irene

Hyde County’s mainland is experiencing flooding in some area rivaling Hurricane Irene, county officials said.

US Hwy 264 from the Beaufort County line to Turnpike Road at the Rose Bay flashing light was impassable this afternoon, county officials said.

“You are strongly encouraged not to even attempt to access this section of US HWY 264 until further notice,” authorities said in a news release.

Hyde County includes Ocracoke Island, which experienced some flooding but otherwise appears to have fared well during the storm.

Scranton and Sladesville this morning were experiencing flooding approaching levels comparable to Hurricane Irene, the county said.

Anyone in need of evacuation from the flooding in Hyde is asked to call the emergency communications center at 252-926-3715. You can also report any conditions on roads, downed trees or flooding to the EOC. The center also has supplies for those in need, including MRE’s, water and tarps available.
