Gaston Lionel Saunders, 54, of Wanchese, passed Sunday, September 23, 2018.

A native son of Wanchese, he was the son of Gus Saunders, Jr. and the late Avis Midgett Saunders.

Gaston is survived by his wife and best friend of 37 years, Merichris Saunders; daughter, Gussie Saunders; son, Darren Saunders; and bonus son, Erik Bailey. Also, surviving is a brother, Terry Saunders (Tangie); four sisters, Margaret Stimett (Richard), Nicky Ballance (Terry), Buggie Saunders, and Simona Saunders; nieces and nephews, Taralynn, Toby, Joel, Stephanie, Taylor Jr., Abby, Owen, and Emma; and great-nieces and great-nephews, Jeffrey, Madison, Eben, Shelby, Fisher, Braelynn, Macara and Gauge.

Gaston loved and supported his community, but his family was his passion. A true waterman whether it be scalloping up north, shrimping down south or fishing around home, Gaston spent over 40 years as a commercial fisherman.

We are going to celebrate Gaston’s life and share our love at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 27, 2018, at Wanchese Assembly of God. The family will receive friends and relatives one hour prior to the service and immediately following the service at the Whole Ministry Center.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to assist the family with the funeral expenses.
