June 22, 1960 – October 11, 2018

Point Harbor – Scott Saufley Leavel, who we know as Scottie, leaves a legacy of love and integrity with his family and those who knew him. He has left behind wonderful memories of a loving husband, father, and grandfather.   We are grateful for each and every day we got to see his glowing smile, and for the lessons learned and all the adventures we shared.

Scottie was born in Staunton, Va., on June 22,1960, along with his twin sister, Tracy, to VP and Nan Leavel. Waiting for the twins at home were two siblings – Tighe and Porter.  He attended Augusta Military Academy in Fort Defiance, Va., and graduated from Martinsville High School in 1979 to move to the Outer Banks of NC.

Scottie was an avid outdoorsman, in his leisure time, he could be found hunting, fishing, golfing, surfing, or on his jet ski and boat.  He enjoyed sitting or walking on the beach with Julie, his wife of 32 years.  In the off season, they would have oyster roasts, fish fries or just a burn barrel gathering.  He loved having people over and cooking!

Scottie and Julie started Scottie & Co., Inc in 1986 and have built many homes and friendships throughout the years.

More importantly, Scottie has been a devoted, patient and somewhat unpredictable husband, a Boy Scout Troop Leader, a tireless soccer coach, steadfast fan of surf contests, and eventually a very proud grandfather. He was Julie’s sidekick in all she was involved in the community, especially when she was the director of the Eastern Surfing Association on the OBX for many years.

On June 10, Scottie had a brain tumor removed and was diagnosed with GBM stage 4-Glioblastoma – one of the most aggressive malignant brain tumors.  He had a difficult cancer journey.  He fought so hard to be with Julie that on October 11, Hurricane Michael and its fierce winds moved him along on his next chapter of life.

Scottie set an exemplary example as a husband, father, and grandfather. He was spiritually strong, compassionate and had a clever sense of humor. Above all, he loved and cherished his family and friends.

Scottie left here on Earth his wife of 32 years, Julie; three sons, Brandon, Lillie and son William; Seth, Samantha and daughter Kinsley; and Morgan-Taylor. He is also survived by his sister Tighe Leavel of Rockaway Beach, New York; his twin sister, Tracy Barry and her husband, Gene, from Fort Worth, Texas as well as a sister in law, Debbie McClearen of Raleigh, NC; a furry, four legged grand-dog named Max; lots of cousins, nieces and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Porter.

A Celebration of Life for Scottie is planned for Saturday, November 10, beginning at 2 p.m. at 915 S Va. Dare Trail, Kill Devil Hills, NC, one of the many houses he has built here on the OBX.  We will celebrate adventures with Scottie, eat, drink and be merry all afternoon and night.  A paddle out – a tradition by those with an ocean centered lifestyle – before sunset – please bring your wetsuits and boards to change into if you are participating.

We will miss him more than words can express. We love you. Be at peace.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts in Scottie’s name be given to one of the following: Caring House, Inc., 2625 Pickett Road, Durham, NC 27705 or The Tisch Brain Tumor Center, DUMC 3624, Durham, NC  27710.
