Lucinda Gallop Baum
July 24, 1928 – January 6, 2019
Manns Harbor – Lucinda Gallop Baum, 90, entered into eternal peace on Sunday, January 6, 2019, in Nags Head surrounded by her loving family.
Lucinda was born on July 24, 1928, in Dare County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Hiram Clyde and Mollie Shannon Gallop. She touched many lives with her humor, generosity and whimsical imagination. She raised her own five children and received and fed many more at her open table and welcoming home. She taught herself guitar and loved to play and sing with her family. Lucinda was one of 14 children, which she documented in her delightful memoir about growing up in Dare County during the depression. Even into her eighties, she loved rowing along the shoreline in her skiff “Mama’s Mink” gathering bottles and relics, clamming and enjoying the waterways on which she was raised in Manns Harbor.
Lucinda was predeceased by her son, Kevin Warren Baum, and eight of her siblings. She leaves her loving memories and many stories to be cherished by her children: Robert Mullen Baum III (Janet) of Panama; Christianna Powers of Norfolk, Virginia; Rebecca Baum Gometz (James) of Chesapeake, Virginia; Jonathan David Baum (Deborah) of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. She was beloved by her grandchildren: Genevieve Warner; Robert and Erika Baum; Allyson and Travis Gometz; Warren, Samuel and Daniel Baum; Luke, Matthew (Brie), Lauren and Thomas Mahler; her great-grandchildren: Meredith Wilson (Matthew), Chandler Warner and Olivia Mahler; and her three great-great-granddaughters: Rainie, Dianna and Aedyn.
Lucinda and her sisters shared a special bond, and she is survived by: Ruth Creef, Mildred West, Myrkie Stevens (Keith), Lucile Sykes (Howard) and Elizabeth Cox. She was adored by her daughters-in-law Melanie Ballance and Elsa Rubio and many nieces and nephews and extended family members.
We all loved more, lived more, and hoped more because Lucinda was in our lives.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church in Manns Harbor on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at 2 p.m. with a gathering to celebrate Lucinda’s remarkable life and legacy afterwards at the Manns Harbor Community Building.
