On Saturday, January 12, the North Carolina Beach Buggy Association put out a call to its members and volunteers on Facebook and its website that the Park Service needed help in keeping Cape Hatteras National Seashore Recreational Area clean and pristine from trash and litter during the government shutdown. The NCBBA is a group of individuals chartered over 50 years ago to keep open beach access.

Fourteen people took action on the last-minute call, braved the cold and met at the Salvo Day use facility on Hatteras Island. They took assignments north and south of Salvo. All trash collection containers had new trash bags changed out with new trash bags in both refuse containers and recycle bins. Several of the volunteers conducted some roadside cleanup, while others rode the beaches picking up litter as they went.

NCBBA sponsors four beach cleanups per year and has been doing so for over 35 years; it is known as Operation Beach Respect.

NCBBA wants to thank all the volunteers who answered the call so quickly. “As you can see, things look pretty clean on Highway 12 on Cape Hatteras. Thanks to our members and guests for their support in keeping our beaches open for public use during this shutdown,” said organizers.
