Seized dogs recovering at animal shelter

Three female dogs and their puppies are recovering at the Currituck County Animal Shelter after being rescued on Sunday, January 13 from what were termed unsafe conditions.

The Currituck County Department of Animal Services and Control responded to a complaint of poor animal living conditions last Sunday and seized 21 dogs from a home in Currituck.

Gina Maurer, Animal Services and Control director, said the grown dogs and their puppies had been kept in a cold and unsanitary environment and had not been provided with adequate food or water. After five days of care at the shelter, the adult dogs are gaining weight. According to the shelter’s Facebook page, Sadie has gained five pounds, Blue gained 9.3 pounds and Lulu gained 10.4 pounds.

Maurer says the plan is once the animals have recovered, Animal Services will seek loving homes for the dogs and puppies.

Two people have been charged with nine misdemeanor counts of mistreatment of animals. A court date has been set for February 20 at the Currituck County District Court.
