Manteo wants new bridge named for Basnight

The Manteo Board of Commissioners, by resolution, is asking that the new bridge over Oregon Inlet be named for former NC Senator Marc Basnight. The resolution points out that Basnight, a Manteo native, has a long history of service to North Carolina and has been an advocate for the replacement span that will connect Nags Head with Hatteras Island.

This month, the Dare County Board of Commissioners asked the public to suggest names for the new bridge scheduled to open in March. The bridge will replace the aging Herbert C. Bonner Bridge that has connected Hatteras Island with northern Dare beaches since 1963. Once the new bridge is opened the old bridge will be demolished.

The county commissioners have placed a form on the Dare County website: www.darenc.com for anyone interested to suggest a name for the new bridge. Public suggestions will be taken until January 31. At their February 4 meeting, the Dare County Board of Commissioners will consider submitting a request to NCDOT for the naming of the new bridge at Oregon Inlet.
