Clara “Mickey” Stringer Meekins

Clara “Mickey” Stringer Meekins, 91, of Nags Head, died Monday, January 28, 2019, at Peak Resources – Outer Banks. The daughter of Florence Speck Reed and Sidney Osgood Reed, she grew up in the Utica/Oriskany area of upstate New York.

In 1948, Clara graduated from nursing school at the Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, NY. She married Walter E. Turk and settled in North Bay, NY. She worked part-time and raised six children (Nancy Bourgeois, Walter William Turk [deceased], Catherine Pfendler, Valerie Metott, Michael Turk, and Susan Conner), was active in Girl Scouts, 4-H, school PTO, Methodist church functions and often volunteered with Red Cross blood drives and vaccination clinics.

After Walter’s death, she married William Stringer of Cooperstown and they retired to the Outer Banks in Manteo. They attended Stumpy Point United Methodist Church. Following the death of William, she later married William Meekins of Stumpy Point.

Her extended family includes twenty-seven grandchildren, forty-three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Friday, February 1. A celebration of life with New York extended family and friends and interment is being planned for later this year.
