College of The Albemarle Foundation recently received a gift of $793 from the Outer Banks Kiwanis Club. The Outer Banks Kiwanis Club had raised funds for students of Dare County for over 40 years, but due to a decline in membership, the decision was made to dissolve the club. Club members reached out to the college’s Foundation to apply the donation to the previously established Florence and Walter Perry Scholarship.

The endowed scholarship is for an Associate Degree Nursing student maintaining a 2.5 grade point average, enrolled full-time and a resident of Dare County. The Outer Banks Kiwanis Club had previously helped the growing population of international students enrolling in classes at the Dare County Campus, offering scholarship opportunities for a number of these students in the last five years. The first international student provided scholarship funds for was a nursing student at the community college.

Additional monies from The Outer Banks Kiwanis Club were given to the Outer Banks Community Foundation, which also provides scholarship support for Dare County residents enrolled at College of The Albemarle through the College of The Albemarle Scholarship and the Milton A. Jewell Trade and Technical Scholarship.

“The Foundation is grateful for the investment that Dare County community members have made in our students. The gift from the Outer Banks Kiwanis Club will help to meet the needs of a deserving Dare County resident enrolled at COA. Gifts like this help our students to put their focus on their course work and to not worry as much about how they will pay for their education. Providing scholarship support is an essential component in student success and completion,” said Amy Alcocer, executive director, COA Foundation.
