Cape Hatteras United Methodist Men receive special recognition

Published 5:37 pm Saturday, February 16, 2019

Simply put, Cape Hatteras United Methodist Men help others.

At the start of its 41st year, the ecumenical organization has fed 19,000 people and used $2 million to build ramps, keep lights on and heat in homes, install insulation, fix roofs, buy medicine and help with storm recovery.

“It’s amazing what people in Dare County can do,” said Robert L. Woodard, chairman of the Dare County Board of Commissioners. On behalf of the board, Woodard recognized the caring work of the Hatteras Island organization at the Feb. 4 board meeting.

Leading the organization now is Dennis Carroll. Also present at the special presentation along with other members was Walton Fulcher, who started the helping group together with Mark Caldwell.

To feed people, the organization operates the Hatteras Island Food Pantry housed at Buxton United Methodist. Volunteers Ray and Claire Schaaf have led that mission for 18 years.

To deliver needed services to Hatteras Islanders, the organization works with many partners and volunteers.

In 2018, 35 volunteers trained to be an early response team. That team was called to work in Hyde County’s Swan Quarter and Engelhard for Hurricane Florence recovery work. Over 30 volunteers in a two-week period worked in Hyde County. The emergency response team continued work in northern Dare County to help with recovery from Tropical Storm Michael.

That off-Hatteras Island work is funded by special contributions.

On-Hatteras Island work is funded by contributions from individuals and organizations. To support the work of Cape Hatteras United Methodist Men, contributions payable to the organization may be sent to P.O. Box 1591, Buxton, NC 27920.
