Two Cape Hatteras teams win conference tourney

Two basketball teams from Cape Hatteras Secondary brought home the winning trophies from the Atlantic 5 Conference Basketball Tournament, played last Wednesday night in Columbia.

In last-minute action, Cape Hatteras topped Bear Grass Charter 37-33 in the first ever junior varsity conference playoff.

In the varsity girls game, Cape Hatteras swamped Bear Grass 59-15.

In a low-scoring first half, Cape Hatteras junior varsity trailed at the end of the first quarter, but outscored Bear Grass in the second to take a 16-12 lead at the half.

Bear Grass poured in the points in the third quarter, besting Cape Hatteras 11-4.

Going into the last quarter, Bear Grass had the lead 23-20. Bear Grass stretched its lead to six points. With three minutes left in the game, Bear Grass led 32-26.

Then, Cape Hatteras connected on baskets by Charlie Conner and Osmar Padilla. A steal and layup by Austin Hooper tied the game at 32.

With one minute left, Logan Hale for Bear Grass scored a point from the free line to push the Bears ahead by a point.

For Cape Hatteras, Conner scored a basket to put the Hurricanes up by one. With 10.2 seconds left, Hooper scored two at the free line. With 7.1 seconds left, Hooper scored another from the foul line.

Scoring in double figures for Cape Hatteras were Conner and Hooper with a dozen points each. Conner pulled down seven rebounds and scored on two put-backs.

For Bear Grass, Bryce Carlisle and Billy Wrenn each scored 11.

In the girls game, Lexus Meekins scored and scored again. For the game, she scored 23 points, almost all in the first half. Her shooting percentage was 65 percent.

Also scoring in double digits was Morgan Fairbanks with 10 points.

In the boys varsity basketball game, Bear Grass topped Ocracoke, 75-73 in double overtime, according to information posted on MaxPreps.

Bear Grass led 34-25 at the half and 54-40 at the end of the third quarter. Ocracoke surged in the fourth quarter scoring 29 points to 15 for Bear Grass. At the end of regulation play, the score was tied at 69. Neither team scored in the first overtime. Bear Grass scored 6 and Ocracoke 4 in the second overtime period.
