The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Outer Banks will welcome Jaki Shelton Green to the Outer Banks to give a presentation as part of their Cultural Crossroads Series on Saturday, March 9 at 7 p.m. The aim of this series of events is to bring a variety of social groups together to promote understanding and diversity in our community. Free and open to the public, these speakers are part of the Roads Scholars Program sponsored by the NC Humanities Council.

Jaki Shelton Green, M.A., is a poet, lecturer and frequent consultant for cultural and educational groups. She has received many accolades and awards for her work including the North Carolina Award for Literature in 2003 and she was inducted into the NC Literary Hall of Fame. Green has taught poetry and facilitated creative writing classes extensively at public libraries, universities and community colleges, public/private schools and literary organizations and she is the owner of SistaWRITE, providing retreats and travel excursions for women writers.

In this program, Green will read from her poetry and discuss stories, icons and idioms as a way of preserving the history and culture of one’s community and invites the audience members to recognize their shared humanity. Green asks that we consider ways to build on the foundations of folklore buried in the past and demonstrates how her poetry has become a shovel, digging up these precious treasures that inform and link generations in a community.
