First Flight boys, Currituck girls win track meet

First Flight boys and Currituck County girls each scored comfortable track and field wins at Currituck County High School March 13.

Sweeping the 1600 meter run and scoring in every event except the hurdles, First Flight boys finished the day with 112 points, more than 30 points ahead of second place Currituck. Also in the field were Bertie in third place and Cape Hatteras in fourth.

Zach Hughes led the First Flight boys team with three individual wins. The Nighthawks junior finished first in the 400, 800 and 1600 meter runs. Cole Cardenas was a double winner for Currituck, taking both hurdle events, and Dylan Gray picked up a first place finish for Cape Hatteras with his win in the century sprint.

In girls competition Currituck County scored heavily in the distance, throwing and relay events for enough points to finish first in the team standings. Bertie, with most of its points in the sprint events, was second, followed by First Flight in third and Cape Hatteras in fourth.

Heidi Sabatini proved to be the standout performer for girls with three first place finishes and a third. After winning the high jump, Sabatini led in both horizontal jumps while picking up a third place finish in the discus.

Alone at the finish of both her events, Hailee Reinke was a double winner for Currituck taking the 1600 with close to a 30 second lead and then finishing two minutes ahead of second place in the 3200.
