Safety first for Dare EMS and NC Aquarium

Dare County EMS personnel joined staff at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island last month to go over specialized emergency response procedures at the aquarium. The teams reviewed mock scenarios like an employee bit by a venomous snake or a diver in need of emergency assistance.

This kind of cross-training helps familiarize Dare EMS with the kinds of safety protocols used at the aquarium so they will know what to expect if called. Working with animals, SCUBA diving and the exhibit spaces throughout the galleries creates unique demands if a staffer needs assistance.

“Having Dare EMS personnel observe and train with the aquarium staff provides invaluable experience, under a controlled situation, to learn of each others’ unique operations,” said Dare EMS Chief Jennie L. Collins.  “This opportunity enables both entities to be better prepared for the specialized needs and emergencies encountered in the aquarium environment. “

It was also a chance for the aquarium’s dive safety team to get important feedback and practical advice from Dare EMS personnel.

“We want our emergency response to be as up to date and thorough as it can be, and the guidance from the Dare EMS team is invaluable,” said assistant dive safety officer Jordan Bridges. “When it comes to emergency response, we want everyone to be on the same page and we are grateful to have such a valuable relationship with Dare County EMS.”
