How precious is Your steadfast love, O God! The children of men take refuge and put their trust under the shadow of Your wings. Psalm 36:7

The heat is here and there is no mistaking that summer is weeks away. Hats, umbrellas and sunscreen are a definite must for taking to the beach. And shady porches are in high demand! Escaping the bright sun for the shade, there is always something new each day to discover.

Shade. What is it and why do we long for it? Shade is the cover from direct light.  There is a quote that says, “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree long ago”. A vivid memory that I can laugh at today but I would get in trouble as a child if I mowed down the little pine saplings my grandfather planted in our yard. He even had to surround them with bricks so it would stop me from mowing too close! Years later, those trees are still growing and provide a canopy of shade over our old family home.  His plan worked!

God allows us to take refuge in Him. When the heat of a problem or a situation comes at us at full speed, we can find comfort under His covering. Bad health reports, job losses, financial woes, emergencies can come at any time and throw us off balance. The deep rooted faith that we planted long ago in our hearts and minds can give us the necessary protection to get through the problems of today. I know that when trouble hits, we can become scattered, confused and left in a daze. Thankfully, those scriptures we memorized, the training, our study of God’s Word comes back to us and we can lean on it and Him. Plant faith today for the day that it is needed the most.
