Gun fired outside Outer Banks Brewing Station; Elizabeth City man arrested

An Elizabeth City man is facing charges after a gunshot rang out in the parking lot of the Outer Banks Brewing Station in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 21.

According to a statement from the Kill Devil Hills Police Department, at around 2:14 a.m., officers in the parking lot observed a burgundy Buick make a U-turn in the west end of the parking lot and then heard a shot fired from that vehicle. Officers quickly converged and established control over the driver and two passengers. A .40 caliber Sig Sauer semiautomatic handgun and a spent shell casing were recovered from inside the vehicle and there was a bullet hole in the front windshield.

Based on the evidence at the scene and statements obtained during the investigation, KDHPD says it appeared the driver, James Mullen, 32, of Elizabeth City, had the gun in his hand as he was steering the vehicle and accidentally discharged the weapon. There were no reported injuries and the bullet was fired at an angle that precluded recovery.
