The community is invited to join the Nags Head Police Department on August 6 to promote community camaraderie and involvement in crime prevention activities as part of the annual National Night Out Against Crime initiative.

Held each year in August, National Night Out Against Crime heightens crime and drug prevention awareness; generates support for and participation in local anti-crime programs; strengthens neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and sends a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

The event, held in conjunction with the Nags Head Community Watch Association, will be held at the Ark International Church at 113 West Villa Dunes Drive near Mile Post 11.5, from 5-7 p.m.

At the event, neighbors will have a chance to “meet and eat” with the public safety personnel charged with protecting the community. In addition, police officers, firefighters and other public safety personnel will show off the tools they use to solve crimes, fight fires and save lives.

A 6 p.m., weather permitting, a C 130 aircraft from U.S. Coast Guard Base Elizabeth City, will fly over the event. In addition, child ID kits will be available, as well as child safety seat inspections and the popular police K-9 demonstrations will take place.

Also participating in the event are Nags Head Fire and Rescue, The Outer Banks Hospital, Jockey’s Ridge State Park, North Carolina Aquarium, North Carolina Works Outreach, Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce, Outer Banks Hotline, Outer Banks YMCA and North Carolina Highway Patrol. Additional activities and participants are also planned
