What would you do if you needed a box of nails? Probably purchase them at your local hardware store, right? But what if you lived in the mid-nineteenth century, where would you get nails then? In that case you would need to find your local blacksmith.

In a time when retail stores did not exist, even the simplest of metal objects were often made by blacksmiths. Using fire, a hammer and anvil, a blacksmith would forge a piece of iron or steel into the desired shape.

Join Island Farm’s resident blacksmith Nelson Edmondson every Friday in August from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. as he plies his trade, making a variety of metal objects for use around the farm.

Island Farm is a living-history farmstead. Located on the north end of Roanoke Island, it depicts life on North Carolina’s Outer Banks during the mid-nineteenth century. The farm is open April through November, Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Daily activities at Island Farm vary throughout the 2019 season. Admission to Island Farm is $8 and children five and under are admitted for free.
