A reentry program for inmates at Dare County Detention Center has formed with the Dare Minority Coalition and College of The Albemarle working to get people signed up with a plan for after their release.

George Carver, executive director of Dare Minority Coaltion, recently met with Officer Eugene Grissom from the detention center and Sherri May from the College of The Albemarle for a walk through at DCDC. Six inmates have signed up to participate in the reentry program upon their release.

Through the program, former inmates will have the opportunity to gain certification and training including welding, HVAC, marine diesel engine repair, computer skills for work, high school equivalency and more.

Carver says the goal of the program is to stop repeat offenses and the “revolving door,” helping program participants have a more positive outlook and productive outcomes. DMC will provide transportation to COA classes as well as court and probation/parole appointments as needed. Carver reports they are also working in collaboration with Emily Urch at Dare Recovery Court.

COA and DMC are working together to get scholarship funds available for future program participants and plan to return to the detention center in October for the next round of sign ups. Carver hopes to be able to expand the program to surrounding counties as well.
