John 2:5, His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

Mary must be expecting Jesus to do something, and don’t all mothers look for great things from their children? I cannot help but wonder what Mary has in mind for Jesus to do. Go and get some wine? But where would he get it? Make some wine? How would that work?

But Mary has complete confidence in Jesus, her son but more importantly the Son of God. Maybe Mary really has no idea about what is going to happen, maybe her mind is as empty as the wine barrels. But regardless, she trusts Jesus. And that is an important lesson for us. How many times in our lives do we see no possibility of a good solution, short of a miracle? And yet we know we cannot give up, we serve a God who specializes in miracles. But whether he does a miracle at this time or not, we are still going to love and trust him. We are going to trust his ways are better than ours. And we need to learn to see the better in God’s ways. Sometimes that is hard, sometimes we don’t like the way things are working out, but we must have the faith in God that he knows best.

And Mary’s instructions to the servants are both simple and golden. Do whatever he tells you. How much better would our lives be if we followed that simple advice? How much better would things work out if we simply did what Jesus told us to do, regardless of what we thought, regardless of how little sense it seemed to make to us, regardless of what anyone else thought. What if we just did what Jesus told us to do, in both the big and small things of life? We all know things would work for the better. And yet how often do we resist this simple instruction.

Father, help me do whatever you say. In Jesus’ name, amen.
