Competition at the December 5 Northeastern Polar Bear Meet saw First Flight teams easily win both the girls and boys meets.

Polar Bear track meets are outdoor track events held during the traditional indoor track season when indoor facilities are not available.

Dominating the distance, sprints and relay events, First Flight girls won five of 11 events, while First Flight boys claimed six of their 12 events.

Individual first place finishers for First Flight girls included Maggie McNinch in the 500m dash with a state qualifying time of 1:26.4, Emma Hartnett in the 300m dash (:47.5) and Emma Byard in the 1000m run (3:28.5).  Byard joined Maggie McNinch, Tatum Dermatas and Madison Pugh to win the 4×400 relay with a time of 4:43.1 and then Byard, McNinch and Pugh came back with Maddy Wagner to win the 4x800m relay with a state qualifying time of 10:51.3.

Currituck’s Ashley Lindsey won the girls shot put with a 33-03 toss and Hailee Reinke was more than half a minute ahead of second place in the girls 1600 meters winning that event with a time of 5:52.8.

First Flight girls won the meet with 79 points, Currituck County was second with 44, John A. Holmes placed third with 41.5, Northeastern was fourth with 33.5 and Pasquotank County took fifth with 24 points.

Winning half the events run Wednesday, the First Flight boys team gathered in 99 points, which accounted for as many points as second and third place combined. Finishing a distant second with 49.33 points Currituck County edged out Northeastern in third place with 47.33 points while Pasquotank County took fourth with 38.33 points.

Leading the Nighthawks scoring effort with state qualifying times Warner Campbell won the 1000m Run (2:42.0) and Tyler Sylvia won the Boys 1600m Run (4:39.8) as did the 4 x 800m relay team of Max Bowlin, Campbell, Aidan May and Sylvia with their winning time of 8:54.2.

Other first place Nighthawks included Kyle Keller in the 500m Dash (1:20.2) and Kenneth Lokie in the Shot Put (34-10). Bowlin, Campbell, Sylvia and  May also combined for a 3:54 to win the 4 x 400m relay.

Finishing second in the high jump, a met the state meet qualifying height clearing 5-10.

Cole Cardenas was the only first place finisher for Currituck County when he tied for first in the boys 55m dash with a :06.6 clocking.

First Flight is scheduled to run again December 13-14 at the Christopher Newport University High Winter Frolic at Freeman Center in Newport News, Va.
