A well-developed black bear cub, at around three months old, can climb trees to avoid danger. The cub’s mother will encourage the cub to climb and will do what is necessary to protect her cub.

Black bears are good runners, swimmers and climbers. Pocosin Lakes Refuge is often a great area to observe black bears, but as the weather gets colder, there will be less bear activity. By January, which is often the black bear’s birthing month, bear activity really slows down until the warmer late spring.

Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is one of nine national wildlife refuges in the Coastal North Carolina National Wildlife Refuges Complex. Pocosin Lakes Visitor Center, located in Columbia, is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. whenever volunteer staffing is available.
