A bevy of tundra swans (Cygnus columbianus) and a variety of other migratory birds are currently on Pea Island, Alligator River and other regional national wildlife refuges.

Mostly plant eaters, on the water, tundra swans eat leaves, stems, grasses and tubers of aquatic plants. On land, they feed in fields after crops such as soybean, barley, wheat, corn and rice have been harvested.

Along the eastern United States, the northeast North Carolina region is about as far south as the tundra swan flies from its distant Arctic summer home.
