Jodi Wyant, public health nurse supervisor, was named the December 2019 Dare County Employee of the Month. Public health nursing director Debbie Dutton presented Wyant with the award at the December 2 Board of Commissioners meeting.

Wyant has been with Dare County’s Department of Health and Human Services for 16 years. She started her career at the county in 2003 as a public health nurse and in 2015, she was promoted to her current role as the supervisor for the school health program.

Through the Department of Health and Human Services, Dare County provides health services to all Dare County Schools students by stationing a public health nurse in each school. Wyant manages and provides leadership for all nine school nurses, coordinates the student dental program and also serves as the nurse for Manteo Middle School.

As a school nurse, she provides acute care and first aid for illnesses and injuries that occur at school. She manages students with chronic health issues such as asthma, diabetes and severe allergies by assuring that there is an emergency care plan in place and that staff is trained to respond to an emergent medical situation. Wyant also assists in the classroom teaching various health topics, providing counseling and encouragement and auditing student immunization records.

According to Dutton, Wyant’s team has the utmost respect for her. Dutton read a selection of sentiments from Wyant’s coworkers’ nominations during the presentation.

“She has the encompassing ability to relate, praise, empathize and encourage her team to be the best that they can be. She has been a very encouraging leader who makes each member of her team feel that they are making a positive difference and contributing to the goals of the school health program. Above all, her team members feel respected and valued,” said Dutton.

In closing, Dutton remarked, “She’s a wonderful role model who practices and leads with superior skills, care and compassion. She is creative, intelligent, uplifting and has a true passion for school nursing.”

Wyant is a native of Manteo and loves being able to give back to the community that raised her. In her time away from school, she enjoys running, reading, fishing and notes that she can be seen “cheering far too loudly for my children at their ball games.”
