New director for US Fish and Wildlife

Aurelia Skipwith has been confirmed as director of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. President Donald Trump re-nominated Skipwith for the Administration post in July.

Skipwith served as deputy assistant secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks at the Department of the Interior. In that role, she was responsible for overseeing policy, planning and regulatory actions for the USFWS and the National Park Service. She was born and raised in Indianapolis and earned a bachelor of science degree in biology at Howard University, a master of science degree in molecular genetics at Purdue University and her juris doctor degree from the University of Kentucky School of Law.

She will be responsible for managing the 567 National Wildlife Refuges covering more than 95 million acres of wildlife habitat.

Nine National Wildlife Refuges are in Eastern North Carolina, including Pea Island, Alligator River, Currituck, Mackay Island, Swan Quarter, Mattamuskeet, Roanoke River, Pocosin Lakes and Cedar Island.
