Right now, there is a lot going on in the world. Talk of war, bombing, plane crashes and fires larger than life. 2020 hasn’t necessarily been off to the start we probably all had hoped for on a global scale.

I always hear people say the phrase: “Now, more than ever.” For example, with these bush fires taking over an entire continent, we tell each other that now, more than ever, Australia needs our prayers. Now, more than ever, we need volunteers to go save the dying wildlife that has thrived for so long.

Now, more than ever, we need to get our country under control and save ourselves from another war. Now, more than ever, we need to band together and do something.

I’m not saying I disagree with people. I think all this needs to be dealt with and we really do need to step us as a nation, as a world, and work together to help each other. However, I don’t agree with this “now, more than ever” mentality.

Let’s step back in time to 1939. Over 40,000,000 deaths occurred in World War II. Soldiers lost their lives, a mass execution of an entire race was taking place, and the world was succumbing to those that thought they had the upper hand. Then, more than ever, we needed people to step up and put an end to the bloodiest battle in history.

1920, the dawn of prohibition. What did we do as a nation? We decided to say “now, more than ever,” we need to do something about this amendment. Smuggling, bootlegging and the like took place. We elected Franklin D. Roosevelt to serve as president of the United States and prohibition was repealed 13 years after it started.

The American Revolution, 1776. Americans came together and fought for the place we all as a country now call home. Then, more than ever, we needed someone to take charge, do what was right, and fight for independence.

I think looking back on history, there were a lot of times our world was in a pinch. However, I know that will never change. There will always be some sort of bind we get ourselves into, either on an individual scale or a much greater one.

Going into this new decade, and for as long as we get time here, I think we should just have a “more than ever” mentality. More than ever, every day, we need to fight for what we want. We need to stand for justice, peace, kindness and truth. More than ever, our world needs a fighting chance.

No matter what, even if we win the war or take down the criminals or stop the fires, there will be something else brewing. If we’re prepared, ready to tackle whatever comes our way and treat every day like a “more than ever” situation, there’s the slightest chance that we nip it before it becomes to great of a matter to deal with.

History has been full of “more than ever” times. History is made every day, so why not treat today like we’re going to make history?
