Along the rocks

Seen at the south jetty of Oregon Inlet, this purple sandpiper (Calidris maritima) was feeding along the mossy rocks. Their main diet consists of snails, clams, oysters, barnacles and insects, but they eat a wide range of gastropods, crustaceans and even seeds, depending on the season and available food.
