Cooking fresh and easy meals with Publix

Whether you’re trying to eat more wholesome meals, expand your culinary expertise or wanting to spend more quality time with the ones you love, home cooked meals always seem to be the better option. However, sometimes life gets in the way and we can’t find the time or the means of cooking at home all the time. Publix aims to make this easier with their Aprons Simple Meals and coordinated ingredients on a weekly basis.

Kim Reynolds, media and community relations manager for Publix Super Markets, said that the grocery store has been providing their own unique recipes to customers for decades. “Publix Aprons Simple Meals are designed to give our customers inspiration and confidence in the kitchen and allows our customers to try the recipe in store,” she said.

Not only does Publix show their customers how to make new recipes each week, but they provide the ingredients for each recipe in the same area, right next to Aprons Simple Meals tasting kiosk. This saves time and may also save your wallet. Reynolds said that Publix will sometimes use sale items to incorporate into their recipes.

If you don’t have time to get Publix in person to see the recipes of the week, Reynolds said there is an alternative: “We also have over 1,000 recipes just a few clicks away at ‪Publix.com.”

So why take the time to learn new recipes instead of taking a trip down the frozen food aisle? Publix manager of customer wellness Shannon McManus shared that in general, fresh ingredients like the ones provided are lower in saturated fat, sodium and added sugars. “These nutrients are often added during processing,” she said.

Buying fresh ingredients allows you to add – and not add – whatever you would like in terms of sodium, sugars, spices and the like. However, this does not mean you should avoid frozen food at all costs.

“Frozen meals and ingredients can be just as healthy as fresh. You can buy plain frozen vegetables, fruits and grains that are made without added fat, sodium and sugar,” McManus said. Publix has “Better Choice” shelf tags that help bring customers to the frozen foods that have more of the nutrients you need – like fiber – and less things that you don’t – like saturated fat or added sodium.

“For example, frozen vegetables with a Better Choice tag will have less added sodium and saturated fat than others,” McManus explained.

Online, the Publix website allows you to filter recipes by dietary restrictions and concerns. Some of these filters include Better Choice, Heart Smart, Carb Smart, Lacto-ova Vegetarian and Gluten Free.

Reynolds said this program has served Publix well. “It’s truly differentiating,” she commented.  “The demand for new recipes continues to grow.”
